About the Author
About the Editors Eric D. Daniel has worked in magnetic recording since 1947. He worked ten years with the BBC Research Department, three years at the National Bureau of Standards, two years at Ampex, and twenty years at Memorex. As Director of Research at Memorex, Mr. Daniel worked on a wide variety of magnetic recording media, including computer, instrumentation, video and audio tape products, and rigid and flexible disks. In 1979 he was elected as a Fellow of Memorex, and in 1982 he retired from full-time employment.
Denis Mee worked on audio recording for five years at CBS Laboratories. He then worked thirty years at IBM where he specialized in advanced storage technologies, including magneto-optical storage, magnetic recording heads, media, and recording subsystems for computer rigid disks. In 1983 he was elected as an IBM Fellow, and in 1993 he retired from IBM. Dr. Mee continues to represent a consortium of companies supporting storage research at various universities.
Mark H. Clark is Assistant Professor of History in the Humanities and Social Sciences Department at Oregon Institute of Technology. An authority on the early history of audio magnetic recording, Dr. Clark spent the summer of 1996 as a Fulbright Professor at the University of Aarhus, Denmark where he researched the life of Valdemar Poulsen.

Lots of information about the people active during the "Modern Era" but short on ideology. A good place to start if interested in understanding who was who and in identifying their most significant works. According to this author there was no coherent set of ideas governing individual artists. He supports the architects' argument that there was no modern style. Was modernism just a break with the past?

This is a good quick introduction. A good supplement to a course on modernist literature or art. What is important is that it shows the Modernist project as something that encompassed art, literature, psychology, science, and politics--in other words, it contextualizes the movement.

This is not an introduction. It is the author talking with himself, enjoying his erudition, employing a plethora of abstruse and arcane allusions, all of which accomplishes nothing other than to remind the reader that being educated and being able to educate are two very different things.

Excellent intro to a complicated subject. Much superior to other more well-known -- and wordier -- attempts at explaining modernism.

They need "A Very Short Introduction" for this VSI! Turgid and prolix..I gave up 3/4 way through.

Very good comprehensive introduction to Modernism. Only not too helpful for me at the moment becasue I was looking for something more specific. Butler has this wonderful ability to make connections between the arts. He constructs a bigger picture of the Modern movement where many forms are interlinked, influenced and informed one another. He also has a longer book Early Modernism that might be more helpful if you are looking for indepth and moe detailed discussions.

A super fast introductory read, this handy tool helps one understand the salient features of an era.

I'm not really a fan of small books with tight binding because it makes it difficult to highlight and annotate on them. Personally, I wont buy from this series again. But remember my review reflects my preference for books. If you like a light compact book that you can put in a jacket pocket then this is an excellent choice for you. Great for a quick read if you ride on public transportation and you don't feel like carrying a big book around

After the 9/11 attacks, there was an expression of global willingness to target terrorism generally, and terrorist financing in particular. The institutional mechanisms that grew out of this are explored in detail here, with a critical examination of the progress made by the international community. The impact of these measures is considered with respect to changes in the nature of the terrorist threat, money confiscated, adoption of international conventions, and global standards by states, and levels of compliance, among others.
